The fortress was built in the late V early VI century during the reign of Emperor Anastasius, in the narrowest part of the promontory. The fortress served to control coastal shipping and the bay east of the port of Atia. According to archaeologists, the fortress was destroyed by an earthquake. From the fortress was discovered its eastern wall and its defensive elements - the rectangular tower, pilaster and the two bastions located in the central part of the wall. The fortress served as a fortification of a settlement occupying an area of 18 decares. Inside, stone foundations of residential and farm buildings have been found. During the Avar invasions the fortress was set on fire and the settlement was looted. The fortress is a cultural monument of national importance.
